Unique, Healthy Ways to Prepare Apples for Seniors

If your senior loved one hasn’t been including enough apples in his or her diet, you may want to come up with new and creative ways to encourage him or her to eat them. Homemade Applesauce

Making a fresh batch of applesauce is a great way to get more apples into your loved one’s diet. As long as the sweeteners are kept to a minimum, the nutritional value of applesauce and whole apples is nearly identical. This dish requires nothing more than a few pounds of apples, a cup of apple cider, and a dash of cinnamon. On average, a single serving of applesauce has 3 grams of dietary fiber, 185 milligrams of potassium, and virtually no fat.

Dehydrated Apple Chips

One of the reasons many seniors shy away from fresh produce is because of how quickly it can go bad. An easy way to combat this is to dehydrate larger batches of apples and turn them into apple chips. This can be accomplished by baking thin slices in the oven for 1 to 2 hours at 200°F. According to a 2013 study published in the Journal of Food Science and Technology, dehydrating apples only removes around 20 percent of their nutrients.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is an incredibly versatile ingredient with many of the same benefits as raw and cooked apples. In addition to making vinegar-based sauces, many health enthusiasts are now touting the advantages of consuming a few teaspoons of this liquid by itself. A 2005 study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found this particular type of vinegar could help regulate blood glucose levels and reduce joint inflammation.

Weeklong Fruit Salad

As soon as the flesh of an apple is exposed to oxygen, it immediately begins to turn brown and soggy. This chemical reaction to the air is one of the reasons many people hesitate to cut up fruit before it is needed. To make fruit salad that can last for a week, some form of citrus must be added. It is also a good idea to keep the dressing separate and only add it just before the salad will be eaten.
